Election day is coming soon. Across the pond in the US, hundreds of thousands of citizens recently voted ‘non-committed‘ in Michigan, Minnesota and Rhode Island, changing the course of history and forcing President Biden to change his stance on Gaza. Voting is one of the biggest catalysts for change and the upcoming elections in the UK are a great opportunity for this.
On May 2nd, some British citizens will be voting in local elections for councillors or mayors in 107 local councils out of 317 across the UK. Local councils are responsible for facilities and services in your local area such as transport, public safety, and more.
In London, there will be an election for the mayor and the 25 members of the London Assembly representing different boroughs in London, which hold the Mayor and Mayoral advisers to account by ensuring their promises to Londoners are delivered. There will also be mayoral elections in other locations across the UK including Manchester, North Tyne and Liverpool City.
Here’s how to ensure that your vote has an impact for Palestine, climate change or any other issues you are passionate to stand up against injustice.
1) Make sure you’re registered to vote for elections by Tuesday 16th April at 11.59pm (and take your ID on voting day).
2) Check who your local councillors/mayors are, if they are standing for election this year: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections
3) Look up your candidates on social media to check their stance or send them an e-mail asking if they will be representing the issues that are important to you.
Here’s one we made earlier:
Dear Councillor/Mayor/Assembly Representative,
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen ahead of the upcoming election. Given the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the ethical considerations surrounding investments in Israeli companies, I would like to inquire about your stance on these critical issues.
Position on Ceasefire in Gaza:
The situation in Gaza has been a longstanding humanitarian crisis marked by violence and instability. As a potential representative of our community, it is crucial to understand your position on advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. The impact of conflicts on civilian populations cannot be understated, and supporting efforts towards peace and stability is paramount. It is crucial to understand your position on advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. Have you spoken or signed letters to press for this – is there a letter or video showing this?
Divestment from Israeli Companies:
Another pressing issue is the question of whether you would support divesting council pensions from arms firms and Israeli companies, which are currently estimated at £1 billion. This decision carries significant ethical implications, as it relates to the council’s financial ties with entities operating in regions affected by conflict.
Would you also recommend arms firms in the UK (including Israeli firms) stop selling aircrafts, components and arms to Israel? Your stance on this matter will reflect your commitment to upholding human rights standards and promoting peaceful resolutions to international disputes. Is there a letter or video showing this?
In light of these concerns, I kindly request that you provide clarity on your position regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the potential divestment from Israeli companies. UK citizens want to vote for mayoral/council candidates like you but they also want to know that they’re voting for an ethical politician.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
